Anjumala Water walls

Why do you think Kerala is named ‘God’s Own Country’? The reason is pretty obvious. Our state is diverse and welcoming in every way. The tourist highlights in the 14 districts make Kerala a perfect destination for a tropical, mountain, beach, and heritage vacation.

Recently, we wanted to visit somewhere new, and visit to Kerala, a local tour travel agent Kerala, recommended this underrated waterfall in Kottayam. This waterfall wasn’t familiar to us when we first heard about it. And that was our reason to explore the place.

As you read further, you’ll know why we loved this place and why we recommend this must-visit one-day spot in Kottayam.

Why are Anjumala Waterfalls Special

Waterfalls are best experienced during the monsoon and when it is less crowded. You can freely enjoy hopping on the stones and soaking your feet in the freshwater.

A little trek is necessary to reach the waterfall. The view of the waterfall we saw was just dreamy. This waterfall is tucked away beautifully in the middle of lush green nature. This makes the whole scenery look dreamy and picturesque. Everything here is perfect for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and solo/family travelers.

When is the best time to go there?

Monsoon. Nothing can beat the scenic look and experience of waterfalls during the monsoon. The freshwater flowing from the top will be cool and refreshing. After a rain, the water often gushes strongly and is cold. We went around June to July, which was the right time to visit. The weather, water, monsoon season, and lush greenery make the place look heavenly.

Going during October and November is another good option. The only difference is the lack of rain. There will be clear water and lush greenery.

As for the time, daytime is the best. You can experience the best of the scenery and take many photos for your Instagram feed and trip memories.

Things to Do at Anjumala Waterfalls

5.1 Trekking & Nature Walks

The off roads here offer a captivating trek. Hearing ‘off roads’ might give you an idea of a massive trek, but it isn’t. Beginners can trek easily to reach the waterfall. Some of us trekked slowly to the waterfall to hear the beautiful music chirped by the birds, accompanied by flowing water and rustling leaves.

5.2 Swimming & Relaxation

Anjumala waterfalls are a swimmer’s paradise. Swimming at the foot of the waterfall is therapeutic and relaxing. Pedicure enthusiasts can experience nature’s finest pedicure by dipping your feet in the natural pools at the base of the waterfalls.

Since we went a few days after the monsoon rain ended, the water level increased, and the rocks in the waterfall were a bit slippery. So, when you visit, be cautious and take care when stepping.

5.3 Photography

This picturesque waterfall brought out Samsung and Apple phones for enchanting photos. Every sight we saw and moment we enjoyed was clicked and recorded. The weather and the natural light made the place and moments photo-worthy.

5.4 Picnic & Food

The surrounding forest area offers a perfect spot for a picnic. Other than that, there aren’t many spots for a restaurant for a proper meal. The best plan you could plan is to have a down-to-earth picnic. Spread out a sheet, and have snacks and a good time. Carry meals only if you can carry and eat them safely.

It is a common sight of people littering with wrappers and bottles. Kindly avoid doing that. Since the waterfall offers a lot to enjoy and relish, you should respect the place by keeping it clean.

Entry Fee & Timings

Budget-friendly fans, you’re welcome here. You don’t have to spend a single rupee here; there is no entry fee or any other kind of fee.

You have all the time in the day to enter and exit, but based on our experience, the best time is during the day. You can see and feel everything best in natural daylight.

Location & How to Reach

2.1 Location

This waterfall is situated in the Moonnilavu Grama Panchayath. By car, it is 55.5 km (1 hour 40 minutes) away from Kottayam town. By bus it is 2 hours and 10 minutes away, and by train it is 10 minutes. Keep in mind that these are approximate distances and time durations. These could vary under different circumstances.

2.2 How to Reach

If it is a group trip, a car is the best option. If you’re going solo, a two-wheeler or public transport will be enough. Those choosing public transport, your nearest railway station is Kottayam Railway Station, which is 45 minutes away from the waterfall. If you’re going by bus, your nearest drop-off point will be Erattupetta, which is 10 km away from the waterfall. In both options, after getting off the bus and train, it is best to call a taxi to reach the waterfalls.

One-Day Trip Itinerary

This is how we spent our time at Anjumala waterfalls.

Ours was a friend’s group trip with all of us in Kottayam itself. So, keep in mind that these timings will change according to the starting and finishing points.

7.00 am – Started from Kottayam

9.30 am – Reached Anjumala Waterfalls, started with a trek

12.00 pm – Relaxed with a picnic

2.00 pm – Started our return to Kottayam

4.30 pm – Reached Kottayam

Our trip to Anjumala Waterfalls was a day to remember. The trek, the swim, the fun, nature’s music, snacks, and our ride to and fro to the waterfalls. Each moment was special and memorable.

The best part was the convenience. Having such a dreamy spot in our own district was a convenient option recommended to us by the best tour travel agency in Kerala, Visit to Kerala.

From our experience, I suggest that you pack your bags to explore this hidden gem of Kottayam at the earliest!
